Muriel & John’s Brookside Gardens
Muriel & John’s Brookside Gardens
Brookside Gardens is an AHS Display Garden, located on a small suburban plot in Baldwin, NY. We have over 550 daylily varieties shoe-horned into about one-fifth of an acre. The property is narrow but deep, bordered in the rear by Milburn Creek, one of a few remaining glacial streams on Long Island that still flow year-round. We are at the edge of a 12-acre freshwater wetland that is heavily wooded, providing a home for many native and migrant birds. The beds at the front of the house contain approximately 70-80 daylilies, with the remaining plants in numerous beds in the rear garden. The composition of our collections is 43% spiders and unusual forms, 11% double, 8% polymerous, with the remainder being singles. John is an amateur hybridizer, specializing in unusual forms and double unusual forms. He has several registrations dating from 2007. Sadly, he lacks the space for a serious program, and is only interested in first generation crosses at the moment. Who knows what might happen if more space becomes available?
Peak Season
The main portion of our gardens at the rear of the house, July 17th, 2009.
